Top ten reasons for being an FHT member #10: FHT is a not-for-profit organisation run by therapists, for therapists

Top ten reasons for being an FHT member

At the FHT, our members’ interests are at the heart of every decision we make and every service we provide. As a not for profit organisation – run by therapists, for therapists – members can be sure that every penny of their fees is spent wisely, to support, advance and protect their interests and career progression as professional therapists.

The FHT is governed by an elected Council of members who oversee a permanent team of FHT staff, many of who are also qualified therapists. The Council positions are voluntary and unpaid, and attract senior practitioners and educators from across the therapy industry.

It is thanks to the calibre of our Council and more than 50 years’ experience as a therapy association, that the FHT is considered the leading authority in its field and is frequently called upon for expert guidance and opinion. On behalf of our members, we work closely with government-backed authorities in the fields of education, regulation, and business skills and enterprise, to help shape and improve the industry.

Top ten reasons for being an FHT member #7: The UK’s largest local support group network

Top ten reasons for being an FHT member #7: The UK’s largest local support group network

FHT Local Support Groups (LSGs) are a place for all those interested in therapies, health and well-being to meet. Meetings are open to members, students, and in many cases the public, where you can hear from expert speakers on various topics within the fields of complementary healthcare, holistic beauty and sports therapies. LSGs are run by members of FHT, who organise an enjoyable and diverse range of events…

Isle of Wight LSG intrigued by massage expert

Isle of Wight LSG intrigued by massage expertThe Isle of Wight LSG recently enjoyed an evening talk and two workshops with FHT accredited course provider Paul Lewis on the topic of dynamic angular petrissage, writes group coordinator Virginia Evans.

Paul’s talk looked at how to build a client base, but also touched on his techniques. I was interested in what he had to say and felt his techniques would have a wide appeal, as I have a disabled son and a friend with MS, and Paul works with people with many different conditions.

Feedback from the group was very positive. We all had the chance to experience the techniques as well as watch the demonstrations. The meeting was well attended and encouraged the group to book places on his workshops.

Laughter was the best medicine for South Holland and Peterborough LSG

Laughter was the best medicine for South Holland and Peterborough LSLinda Nightingale gave a fun and interactive talk about the benefits of laughter yoga for the South Holland and Peterborough LSG, writes group coordinator Zoe Myall.

Devised by Indian cardiologist Dr Kataria, laughter yoga is a well-being exercise routine that combines laughter exercises with yogic breathing. Its practitioners say the benefits include releasing endorphins, helping to boost the immune system, toning muscles, encouraging positive thinking and promoting relaxation.

The group certainly got involved and we were allowed to act like ‘big kids’ for the evening. Laughter yoga leader and teacher, Linda, explained that through simulated exercises ‘fake’ laughter becomes real laughter. We could choose how we wanted to laugh – either big, hearty laughs, or a gentle ‘ho, ho, ho’. It wasn’t long before the real laughter was flowing as we engaged in fun chants, songs and games. We finished the session with a guided meditation and were ready to face a new year with a smile on our faces and a spring in our step.

Top ten reasons for being an FHT member #6: Discounted continued professional learning

The FHT prides itself on providing high-quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, that is both affordable and flexible, to suit the needs of our members. This includes online learning, qualifications, short courses, and an annual Training Congress where you can learn and mingle (2015 details coming soon). Many of our local support groups also organise training and workshops for those who regularly attend their meetings, and we also signpost our members to free online training, where relevant to practising therapists.

CPD is an essential part of good professional practice as well as a fundamental principle of professional ethics. For the public, service users and employers, CPD provides the reassurance that as individuals, and as a profession, FHT members are committed to upholding standards.
