Be friendly in February


Action for Happiness (AFH) puts the focus on building good relationships with others, in its Friendly February action calendar.

AFH publishes monthly calendars, offering daily affirmations on the theme of the respective month.

Suggestions for February include the following:

  • Send someone a message to say how much they mean to you
  • Put away digital devices & really focus on who you’re with
  • Respond positively to everyone you meet today
  • Do an act of kindness to make life easier for someone else
  • Be gentle with someone who you feel inclined to criticise.

The calendar also shares the words of 19th century US writer, and author of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain, in an inspirational quote: ‘The best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer someone else up.

Four simple steps to stop being hard on ourselves

Mindful has recently drawn attention to the RAIN meditation, a mindfulness technique to address feelings of insecurity and unworthiness and encourage self-compassion. The acronym was originally created around 20 years ago by Michele McDonald and follows four steps of practising mindfulness, as outlined below:

  • Recognise what’s going on
  • Allow the experience to be there, just as it is
  • Investigate with kindness
  • Natural awareness, which comes from not identifying with the experience

The recognising step focuses on acknowledging the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are affecting us, such as the ‘critical inner voice’, ‘constricting beliefs’ and feelings of shame and fear that are holding us back. Mindful states that this step is like ‘awakening from a dream or coming out of a trance.’

Allowing the experience to be there is to accept the emotions, feelings and sensations and avoid withdrawing from the present moment because of the unpleasantness. By allowing these feelings we are not agreeing they are just but are able to look deeper at them to reevaluate them and understand them.

Investigating with kindness is to draw attention to the current experience, to ask questions like: what is happening? What wants more attention? What am I believing? This is to be more mindful and to stop unconscious beliefs and emotions controlling your experience that make you feel unworthy.

Natural awareness is about non-identification, not linking the present moment with emotions, sensations or stories from the past that can often have a negative impact on how we cope with current situations. This is about resting and letting our ‘natural awareness’ take control.

Oh happy day

Today is the United Nations International Day of Happiness. The UN has celebrated this since 2013 and uses this day to celebrate the importance of happiness in the lives of people throughout the world.

The UN believes that sustainable development goals that seek to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet are the key aspects that will lead to well-being and happiness across the globe. The organisation set up 17 goals in 2015 based on the above principles and have teamed up with the Smurfs to promote the campaign.

The Action for Happiness movement is also committed to encouraging people everywhere to help create a happier world and strongly supports the UN’s International Day of Happiness.

Action for Happiness has launched a collaborative campaign at that involves lots of causes and organisations coming together to celebrate the day.
