Tips for walking in November:
- Apply suncream: Even if the temperature is low, harmful rays can always get through. Make sure to wear at least a minimum of SPF 15.
- Dress in layers: As you start out on a cooler morning, it can sometimes take a moment to warm up. It’s important to keep your muscles warm to ease into things. Temperatures are often interchangeable, so wear several layers that you can take on or off as required.
- Comfy, practical footwear: A good pair of waterproof, warm shoes are useful in the fall, coming in handy even when it isn’t raining with damp grounds and dew. Having dry feet goes a long way to making your walk more enjoyable – with less chance of blisters!
- Wear a hat and gloves: You might need a hat and gloves on colder autumn days, particularly in the hills or by the coast. Hats not only keep the sun off your face, but also keep the warmth in as a lot of heat escapes from the top of our heads.
- Windproof and waterproof: Keep a waterproof jacket handy to protect you from wind or sudden rainfall. Walking in the rain is very different to walking while soaking wet.
- Plan your walk: Remember the days are shorter, so if you’re walking in the evening, plan carefully and take a torch or stick to well-lit paths. Don’t walk in high and remote country unless you are properly equipped and experienced
- Drink water: It’s easy to remember to drink water during the hot weather. If you’re going on a long walk, remember to bring some water or equally hydrate after a short walk. Water is good for every part of your body!
- Enjoy nature’s beauty: Autumn means that the same route can look so different from day to day. One night of rain or wind can change everything. Winter is coming, so make sure to enjoy the fall
- Be present: Fall is a great time to practice gratitude and being ‘in the moment’. Take each walk as a time to reflect on something new, walk and catch-up with a friend or look out for different wildlife
