FHT Virtual Congress – Sheila Nugent

In the lead up to the FHT’s first Virtual Congress we have been introducing FHT members to our event speakers. Today we hear from Sheila Nugent from the Sheila Nugent School of Reflexology who is speaking about how to take a holistic approach to health.

I am the third daughter of ten children. I was privileged to have had parents who were incredibly positive, they always told us to reach high. We had a business and I worked in it from I was seven to twenty-seven when my son was born. This was the background for my focused outlook, work hard and keep your focus high.

After having three children in two years, my second son sadly died, I was drawn to practice yoga which started my journey forty years ago into complementary therapies. I trained in many disciplines, one of them being reflexology little did I know I would one day have one of the largest reflexology schools in Ireland.

I was one of the founding members of the Irish Reflexologists Institute (IRI) and was chair person for the Irish Council of Reflexologists from 1991-95. When I delivered my report from Ireland, as chair person of the Irish Council of Reflexology to the first European Conference in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 2006, I concluded by saying that I saw the holistic approach represented by Ireland, physical (South), intellectual (East); spiritual (West) and emotional (North). I was congratulated by the delegates for mentioning the importance of taking a holistic approach to health and to this day it is my main emphasis in my teaching.

Teaching reflexology in Northern Ireland, during the troubles, took a tremendous amount of work and dedication. Bringing people together, who were of from different communities, to teach them a therapy with love and compassion, when some would have never sat in the same room together. There was a lot more than the wonderful therapy of reflexology being taught during those times. It was the healing of attitudes, mutual respect and acceptance and tolerance of others’ beliefs.
