UK book on health journalism and PR for health journalists
A new e-book about the realities of health journalism and PR, written as a working resource for all journalists who have to cover health, has been published in the UK – the first of its kind to be released this side of the Atlantic.
Edited by veteran health campaigner and health journalism lecturer Dr John Lister, First Do No Harm contains 22 chapters, covering many aspects of health reporting. The book was published to coincide with First Do No Harm, the international conference on health journalism held in May in Coventry, and is intended to help journalists grasp the complexities of healthcare reporting. Authors include John Lister, whose chapters cover the state of health journalism and health policy in the UK and in Europe; Trudy Lieberman from the USA, on the way Obamacare was reported; Shaun Lintern, on the reporting around Mid Staffs; Alan Taman, health PR and researcher, on PR in the NHS and the ethics of PR, and on interpreting medical reports; Anna Wagstaff, Editor of Cancer World, on evidence-based reporting and the relationship between patients and policy makers, Sir Iain Chalmers, corordinator of the James Lind Initiative, on promoting critical appraisal of treatment claims; and Gary Schwitzer from the USA and publisher of Health News Review, on the need for balance and accuracy in health reporting.
