Hope for future through candle campaign for cancer sufferers

Leading cancer prevention charity World Cancer Research Fund has launched a campaign to support the hundreds of thousands of people diagnosed with cancer every year and to remember those who have died from the disease.

The Candle of Hope initiative is designed so the friends and relatives of people with cancer can do something to mark their loved one’s fight against the disease.

Amanda McLean, General Manager at World Cancer Research Fund, said: “The campaign helps people remember those who have faced cancer – whether they’ve sadly succumbed to the disease, beaten it or are still being treated.

“We’ve launched the appeal at a time when thoughts turn to friends and family in the run-up to Christmas, which is also a time of hope. By getting involved in the campaign, people are strengthening that hope for the future by supporting research into cancer prevention and raising awareness about reducing the risk of the disease through lifestyle changes.

“Scientists estimate that by making changes to the food we eat, increasing our amount of physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight about a third of cancers could be prevented.”

The campaign, which is being launched on Facebook today (Nov 18), allows people to create a personalised image to demonstrate their support for the Candle of Hope and make a donation to World Cancer Research Fund.
