The charity Action For Happiness attended the World Happiness Summit in Italy last week, where their co-founder, Richard Layard, launched a new Wellbeing Manifesto – a call for leaders to put wellbeing first.
The manifesto strives to promote people’s overall wellbeing, encompassing their enjoyment of life, sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. It aims to increase awareness of the best approaches to achieving ultimate wellbeing and convince policymakers that change is necessary.
More and more people agree with this approach, but policymakers have been slow to respond – in government, business and education. Instead, we have a world where measured stress has been steadily rising in every continent. With their evidence on how to build a happier world, they are looking to use it to increase overall wellbeing.
Here’s how:
Measurement – All governments, employers, and schools should be measuring the wellbeing of those they affect, at least once a year.
Government – The goal of governments should be to sustainably improve the wellbeing of the citizens, choosing those policies which are most cost-effective in terms of wellbeing.
Business – The purpose of business should be to sustainably improve the wellbeing of their employees, customers and suppliers as well as their shareholders.
Schools – The main aim of educators should be to enhance the present and future wellbeing of their pupils, using evidence to achieve this.
Individuals – We should all be trying to create the most wellbeing in the world, and actively try and reduce the amount of misery, by spreading love and happiness.
