FHT Training Conference 2023: A Q&A with Chris Duquemin – New Vision Therapy

Tell us a bit of background about yourself and your interests. How did you get into the industry? What made you want to become a Therapist?
Hi. I originally come from a background in mechanical engineering, and got into bodywork after a long standing shoulder issue of many years was resolved in one session with a complementary therapist. It triggered my interest, and I began to study the body more like an engineer, than a medically trained individual. Hence, after all these years, we have New Vision Therapy, or Body Engineering!
At NVT we aim to treat the root cause of an imbalance, and not just firefight the associated symptoms. The body has this incredible ability to fix and heal itself, so why would try to fix a self healing mechanism. Makes no sense to me. We just have to identify and release the restrictions that are preventing this natural self healing mechanism from doing its job. Usually this almost always involves a compromised central nervous system.
I love physical exercise, and work out my old body most mornings to set me up for the day! I believe we should lead by example, and be a walking talking advocate for what we are promoting.
What do you enjoy most about your job as a Therapist?
Without doubt, seeing the results that the students attain, and hearing their success stories. It is very humbling when someone with a long standing imbalance is able to self heal again. Life changing!
Are there any challenges you have had to overcome as a Therapist and Teacher? How have you overcome these?
Yes! The biggest hurdle was trying to explain and put into words all the crazy stuff that I do without thinking! For me, we have an obligation as therapists to be able to fully explain what we are doing at ANY point in the session. Hence, the need for a really solid level of understanding in the areas we work in. If we cannot explain to a medical professional what we are doing and why, then we have more knowledge we need to attain!!
What is your seminar about and what can viewers expect to come away with?
My seminar is focused on Post-traumatic stress because this is an area very close to my own Heart. I know the benefits can be felt immediately and have a massive beneficial impact for the individual and their family. I will explain how to easily confirm the central nervous system is compromised, and then how we go about deactivating those “fight or flight” states, to enable the body to begin the self healing process.
If I do my seminar correctly, then viewers should come away with a good understanding of why so many of us sadly suffer from Post-traumatic stress, and more importantly what can be done to help.
What is it about your topic that appeals to you and why is it useful for Therapists?
Quite simply, it effects every one of us! If someone is manifesting symptoms that are often medically undiagnosable, then the nervous system is usually out of balance. As therapists, we can learn to confirm this in just a few seconds, and then there is hope!
Even if that therapist does not personally possess the skillsets to help, then at least they can refer to someone who does. If this seminar is able to help just one person to get better again, then mission accomplished!!
What is one piece of advice you have or have received for Therapists wanting to develop their Therapy practice?
2 Things! Firstly, do not do this for money. I truly believe if you go into practice with the sole purpose of helping others, then the universe will provide all you need to accomplish that. Trust the bigger picture!
Secondly, enjoy what you do! Give 100% in every session, but enjoy it!!
What do you consider to be the most important traits and skills for a therapist to have?
I believe the body on the couch knows exactly what you can and cannot do to help them, irrespective of what you actually practice. They will always guide the session, so I always advise my students to simply Trust the Body, Trust what they feel and Trust the Process.
Secondly, always be grounded and neutral. It is the clients process, and we are just helping to facilitate it. Do not get emotionally involved!
Not easy at first, but these skills will develop very quickly if you are conscious of them!
Do you have a goal for 2023?
Share this knowledge with as many as I can. As a therapist I can see maybe 5 people a day. If I can help to train 9 others, then we can help 50 a day!
I also believe that if we think we know it all, and stop being open to the possibility of learning new ideas, we should pack in. Science and knowledge is forever changing, so stay alert to every opportunity to acquire new skills, and become a better therapist. I want to learn something new everyday!!
