Consuming more potatoes before pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus while pregnant, according to a recently published US study. Researchers from Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and Harvard University followed over 15,500 women, who were pregnant between 1991 and 2001. The team of researchers concluded that substituting potatoes with other vegetables, legumes, or whole grain foods might lower the risk.
