Have you had unwanted attention or nuisance calls?

Following a supervision session with CAM practitioners, Sharon Fairhurst (senior lecturer in complementary healthcare) and Sally-Ann Baker (senior lecturer psychology) of Glyndwr University, are researching the extent to which practitioners nationally have experienced personal safety issues.

It has long been acknowledged that working in a profession where normal boundaries are transgressed through the use of ‘touch’ therapies, can be complex (Disch, 1991). Within the UK many CAM practitioners are self-employed, often working in isolation, from clinics within their own homes, small business premises or peripatetically, visiting clients homes to provide treatments.  Many practitioners advertise their business via the internet and at times the nature of the profession could mean they attract or have experienced unwanted attention.  It is not known the extent to which therapists might be subjected to nuisance calls, cyber stalking or other issues.  Nor is it known what impact this might have or the steps that practitioners take to ensure their own safety.

To explore these issues, Sharon and Sally-Ann would like to invite FHT members to participate in an online survey. The FHT hope to publish the findings of this research.
